Welcome to Hahn-Schickard: The research center for innovative microsystems technology. With a team of over 300 employees, we transform ideas into cross-industry solutions - from conception to production at four locations in Baden-Württemberg. At our Freiburg site, the emphasis is on developing analytical solutions in microsystems technology, particularly for point-of-care diagnostics.

For the area of Microfluidic Platforms in Freiburg, we are looking for an Assist. Student/ Master Thesis Student, starting from 01.04.2026 or later, for

Automated Filling of Flow Cells for Nanopore Sequencing using Centrifugal Microfluidics (m/w/d)

Aim of the thesis

  • For nanopore sequencing, flow cells have to be loaded manually which delays analysis and may disrupt delicate pores rendering them unusable.
  • The goal of this project is to design a prototype for the automated loading of MinION Flow Cells for nanopore sequencing.

Your Tasks

  • Iterative Fluidic Design: You will use Solid-Works and network simulation tools to design a microfluidic chip for automated filling of flows cells for sequencing.
  • Validation of Fluidic Design: You will use optical test setups to evaluate fluid flow and nanopore sequencing of DNA samples to validate the functionality of your design.
  • Data Analysis: You will analyze nanopore sequencing data using bioinformatic tools

Your profile

  • Studies: Microsystems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biotechnology, or other STEM discipline.
  • Skills: Knowledge of either fluid mechanics or biology, and an interest to broaden knowledge across both fields.
  • Work Style: Proactive and team-oriented
  • Language: English or German

Our offer to you

    • A motivated and interdisciplinary research environment
    • Practical experience with nanopore sequencing, from laboratory work to downstream bioinfor-matic evaluation
    • Flexible working hours and collaboration with experienced researchers at Hahn-Schickard and IMTEK
    • Participation in first-class health programmes such as Hansefit
    • Subsidy for meals
    • Subsidies for public transport

    Your Application

Mrs. Caitlin Turney will be pleased to answer any question you may have.
