Welcome to Hahn-Schickard: The research center for innovative microsystems technology. With a team of over 300 employees, we transform ideas into cross-industry solutions - from conception to production at four locations in Baden-Württemberg. At our Freiburg site, the emphasis is on developing analytical solutions in microsystems technology, particularly for point-of-care diagnostics.

At the Freiburg site, the focus is on analytical solutions, especially for point-of-care diagnostics. But we also research, devel-op and manufacture electrochemical energy systems, autonomous fluidic robots and 3D printing of electronics.

For our Laboratory Automation division we offer at Freiburg im Breisgau the following position (beginning from July 2025 or later):

Bachelor or Master Thesis - Development of Multi-Layer Interconnects for Hybrid Additive Manufactur-ing of Embedded Electronics (m/f/x)

Your Tasks

You will be part of a novel development project in collabo-ration with industrial partner ARBURG and state-of-the-art 3D printer.
  • Develop expertise in hybrid additive manufacturing (polymer and molten metal printing).
  • Design and fabricate hybrid printable parts; operate and optimize 3D printing equipment.
  • Conduct systematic, quantitative analysis of experimental prints.
  • Optimize polymer parameters for reliable microchannels in multilayer electronics.
  • Evaluate vertical electrical connections with metal printing for reproducibility and density.
  • Determine minimum feature sizes for selected nozzle-material combinations.
  • Test contact pad strategies for optimal droplet coverage and merging.
  • Optional: Design and 3D print a functional hybrid electronic circuit (e.g., with sensors or PCB integration).

Your profil

  • Open and willing to learn new technologies and principles
  • Background in engineering sciences or comparable
  • Demanding and precise work ethic
  • The following are considered as plus: experience in CAD design, in ECAD (PCB) design, in 3D printing (knowledge of Gcode, toolpath planning); automation with Python (e.g., measurement evaluation, Gcode post-processing)
