Welcome to Hahn-Schickard: The research center for innovative microsystems technology. With a team of over 300 employees, we transform ideas into cross-industry solutions - from conception to production at three locations in Baden-Württemberg. At our Freiburg site, the emphasis is on developing analytical solutions in microsystems technology, particularly for point-of-care diagnostics.

At the Freiburg site, the focus is on analytical solutions, especially for point-of-care diagnostics. But we also research, develop and manufacture electrochemical energy systems, autonomous fluidic robots and 3D printing of electronics.

For our Laboratory Automation division, we offer at Freiburg im Breisgau the following position (beginning from November 2026 or later):

Research Student Assistant / Master Thesis (m/f/x)

Microstructural Characterization and Mechanical Testing of 3D metal printed on Advanced PCB Surfaces

Your Tasks

You will be part of a team working on multi-material 3D printing platform for microfluidic and microelectronics applications.

  • Getting familiar with the StarJet technology and establishing suitable jetting modes and process conditions for a molten metal alloy.
  • Producing solder deposits and joints using different StarJet process parameters.
  • Systematically investigating the influence of process parameters on the resulting printed metal.
  • Performing materials characterization of printed deposits and solder joints, and investigating the interaction between solder alloy and different PCB surfaces.
  • Preparing metallographic cross-sections and performing microscopy and other available materials characterization techniques.
  • Evaluating the bonding performance of the resulting solder joints using suitable mechanical testing methods.
  • Evaluate and visualize experimental data.

Your profile

  • Bachelor’s degree (or currently enrolled in a Master’s program) in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Microsystems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • A strong interest in materials science and metallurgy is desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of metals, alloys and microstructure is advantageous.
  • Interest in solder materials, 3D printing, electronic materials, and materials characterization.
  • Willingness to work hands-on in the laboratory and operate experimental equipment.
  • Basic experience with microscopy, metallography, or mechanical testing is advantageous.
  • Ability to independently evaluate experimental data and draw scientific conclusions.
  • Good communication skills in English and/or German

Our offer to you

  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge research in intelligent multi-material additive manufacturing
  • An attractive workplace for a student working at a modern, excellently equipped research institute that is close to industry
  • Excellent support for you working in a dynamic, flexible team
  • Flexible working hours
  • Partial refund of travel expenses when using public transport of the ÖPNV (public transport system)
  • Health and lifestyle: Participation in first-class health programs such as Hansefit
  • Subsidy for meals
